Selected Global Warming Charts

Charts of increases in global warming gases (three of CO2 and one of Methane), and three charts of the resultant increases in global temperatures, and one chart of the resultant lose of Arctic sea ice, are all on the following pages.

Unfortunately I could not include the chart of CO2 levels over that last 400,000 years that was presented as a large insert in the October 2007 National Geographic magazine. Using data taken from Greenland ice cores, and Antarctic ice cores, it shows that carbon dioxide levels never rose above 280 parts per million until about 1860. Since then they have never gone down and they now stand at 400 parts per million, and the rate of increase itself is increasing. Reversing this trend will take decades at best and so far nothing significant has been done by governments or industries or by anyone to even begin to tackle the problem. It took 150 years to get this runaway increase and it'll probably take an equal amount of time to get it back down assuming we took action now, but that won't happen. People don't demand action till the dams break, the bridges fail, till people begin to die in large numbers. And then, when action is finally taken, it will be ill-conceived, profit driven and politically driven, and will have its own very negative effects on peoples lives. Science will have to take a back seat. In a mad rush to "fix it now", to "just do something", some very poor ideas will be implemented, probably resulting in another whole host of problems equally as severe as global warming, or even worse.

Old people like me will probably miss the worst of it. Young people, and especially their children, and grandchildren, will have to bear the worst of it. There will untold human suffering. Billions dying is not inconceivable. How humans will come out of it to reach a better world is unclear. That world will undoubtedly be radically different than the one we know today.
